The Best South Park Episodes: Top 10 from Fishsticks to Goobacks (2023)

That's a bit crazySouth Parkhas been on the air for over 20 years. The animated series debuted in 1997 on Comedy Central, a cable channel few watched, but the series quickly became a national sensation. Instead of disappearing after a few years (and thus going against the TV trend),South Parkit survived for two decades, mainly thanks to its creatorsTrey ParkeriEat the stone. Unlike most long-running TV series, Parker and Stone have always served as executive producers and showrunners. They've since made movies and a Tony-winning Broadway musical, but each year they return to the helm and create all new episodes.South Park, while retaining the show's sharp wit, social commentary, and most importantly, unbridled humour.

With a total of 307 episodes (almost all of them are now on HBO Max), there are bound to be some bad episodesSouth Park, but there are many more good ones. There are indeed so manyAwesomeepisodes of this series show that narrowing down the Top 10 is an almost impossible task. I did my best, looking for the 10 episodes that best summarizedSouth Parkon a top performance, whether it's sharp commentary or witty humor (also as an aside: so far). As with any subjective list, yours will no doubt differ from mine, but here's a primer that showcases some of the show's biggest moments:

10. "You're Getting Old" - Season 15, Episode 7

The Best South Park Episodes: Top 10 from Fishsticks to Goobacks (1)

This episode shocked a lot of people. The season 15 finale revolved around Stan being diagnosed as a "cynical bastard", ending on an ambiguous note as Stan is estranged from his friends as someone who can't enjoy anything. Fans wondered if this was Parker and Stone's way of saying goodbye, if they were finally fed upSouth Park. As it turned out, no, they were still game to go. But the fact that "You're Getting Old" evoked such strong emotions is a testament to the show Parker and Stone built. It's a show full of dumb jokes, but we as viewers care about these characters. We want them to be happy. And in hindsight, as is often the case, Parker and Stone touched on a topic that was incredibly timely; the ubiquity of the internet has made many, quite frankly, "cynical assholes" who feel the need to criticize everything.

9. "Goobacks" - Season 8, Episode 7

The Best South Park Episodes: Top 10 from Fishsticks to Goobacks (2)

Leave itSouth Parktackling the debate on illegal immigration head-onicreate a slogan at the same time. "Goobacks" finds people from the future traveling back in time to find jobs and send money back to their families in the year 3045. It's a hilarious twist on a burning issue that tackles both sides of the argument with an original and refreshing sci-fi version. And of course it ends with an orgy.

8. "Fishsticks" - Season 13, Episode 5

The Best South Park Episodes: Top 10 from Fishsticks to Goobacks (3)

"Fishsticks" is built entirely around one of the best jokes in the worldSouth Parkhistory and for that reason alone it is worth the Top 10. YesKanye Westno sense of humor is hilarious on its own, but then you throw in a jokerCarlos Mencia, a subplot revolving around Cartman and Jimmy battling for credit for a joke and song about gay girls, and you've got comedy gold. This episode is a perfect example of a commitment to structure and the cohesion it createsSouth Parkso great - all these different things are funny in their own right, but Parker and Stone work to tie them all together and end with one great punch line.

7. "Butters Own Episode" - Season 5, Episode 14

The Best South Park Episodes: Top 10 from Fishsticks to Goobacks (4)

Butters is one of the best characters onSouth Park, with a period, so his first Butters-focused episode is on this list. The episode plays with the idea of Butters being a deadly mix of aloof and kind-hearted to a fault as he accidentally discovers his father's homosexual affairs and then survives his mother's attempt to kill him. Butters always sees only the very best in people with little or no ability to discern fraud or wrongdoing, which is what makes him such a great con artist. Really, you could probably fit any number of episodes where Cartman makes fun of Butters, but "Butters' Very Own Episode" has a particularly disturbing kind of dark comedy that makes it stand out all these years later.

6. "All About Mormons" - Season 7, Episode 12

The Best South Park Episodes: Top 10 from Fishsticks to Goobacks (5)

South Parksince then he has become famous for shootingatreligions and belief systems, but "All About Mormons" was a watershed moment when it first aired in 2003, exposing the seemingly insane nature of Mormon religious history. What makes this episode so great is that it resembles Parker and Stone's Broadway musicalThe Book of Mormon, the episode presents Mormons as really good people - it focuses on some of their beliefs, but not the people themselves. The style and structure of the episode is almost perfect, as Parker and Stone use music to underline their jokes - somethingSouth Parkdone many times over the years to great effect.

5. "Trapped in the Closet" - Season 9, Episode 12

The Best South Park Episodes: Top 10 from Fishsticks to Goobacks (6)

AKA "The only episode that ever made Comedy Central nervous about airing." WhileSouth Parkaimed at Mormonism, the highly controversial religion of Scientology was something else entirely, as it also revealed the secrets of religion to the masses. It was a terrifying prospect for the network. Indeed, after the initial airing, Comedy Central pulled the rerun of the episode amid rumorsTom Cruiseit's an accident. And while "All About Mormons" maintained a sympathetic approach to followers of the Mormon faith, "Trapped in the Closet" is quite poignant about those who belong to the Church of Scientology. Like all the bestSouth Parkepisode, the simple story takes a lot of turns hereR Kellyappears with a gun and Cruise iJohn Travoltathey are literally "in the closet", until Stan is announced as L. Ron Hubbard's second coming. Stupid, of course, but with a purpose.

4. “The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers” – Season 6, Episode 13

The Best South Park Episodes: Top 10 from Fishsticks to Goobacks (7)

This show parodied several movies and TV shows during its run, but "The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers" remains the most cohesive and successful of them all. In one episode, the series goes through the basic story of the movieLord of the Ringstrilogy, but with its own refreshing twists. This is part of what it doesSouth Parkstand out - it's not enough to simply refer to something familiar, Parker and Stone then insist on adding something new and original to that basic structure to make it their own. In this case, it's a VHS porn tape instead of a ring, and while the kids return this tape to Blockbuster as part of a major search, the parents are busy cutting the haircuts for the extremely graphic video they might see. have just given to their children.

3. "Make Love, Not Warcraft" - Sezona 10, Epizoda 8

(Video) Stan And The Boys Go Skiing | South Park Episode 72

South Parkdoesn't get enough credit for the artistry of its animation, especially being created in such a short time frame, but "Make Love, Not Warcraft" is a brilliant piece of mixed media. enlist the help of Blizzard,South Parkpresents his odeWarcraftand online gaming in incredible detail. But of course it's the story that really resonates, as the boys spend every waking hour trying to get ahead in theWarcraft, thereby becoming obese, greasy and addicted to night pot. Randy's subplot has a particularly hilarious payoff, and the character development as the boys become more sedentary is magnificent. In terms of cohesion, jokes, and punchline, "Make Love, Not Warcraft" is pretty much perfect.

2. "Scott Tenorman Must Die" - Season 5, Episode 4

The Best South Park Episodes: Top 10 from Fishsticks to Goobacks (9)

For the first few seasons, we knew Cartman was a jerk, but "Scott Tenorman Must Die" reveals the dark depravity and devotion to evil on Eric Cartman's mind. Indeed, even though it first aired in 2001 and we've seen hundreds of episodes since then, Cartman turning a boy's parents into chili and forcing him to eat it is still one of the most disturbing things.South Parkever did. It's the kind of stunningly dark comedy that makes this series so brilliant, and this look into Eric Cartman's psyche remains one of the series' most fascinating and best episodes.

1. "Imaginationland" - Season 11, Episodes 10-12

The Best South Park Episodes: Top 10 from Fishsticks to Goobacks (10)

AlreadyTeam America: World Police, fans were left wondering when Parker and Stone would make another movie, or if they would ever make a sequelSouth Park: bigger, longer and uncut. While they haven't made another movie that has been shown in theaters, the three-episode opus "Imaginationland" certainly qualifies as Parker and Stone telling tall tales on a grand scale. It also happens to be the best rideSouth Parkepisode in the history of the series. So I'm cheating a bit here by grouping three episodes into one, but the three-episode run of "Imaginationland" is so satisfying it had to be done.

(Video) Have a Creamy Day - SOUTH PARK

What begins as seemingly another episode where Cartman is a dick quickly turns into a true fantasy epic, complete with a battle between good and evil fictional creatures. In terms of animation and character design, "Imaginationland" is still thereSouth Parkis a highlight, and even the characters are surprisingly believable - you actually care about what happens to these silly, innocent fictional creatures. Subplots are also aces, sinceM. Nacht Shyamalangag to Butters' quest, but the episode ends in most casesSouth Parkpossible way: with Kyle sucking Cartman's imaginary balls. Never change.

Honorable Mentions: "Casa Bonita", "Christian Rock Hard", "Best Friends Forever", "Go God Go", "Something Wall-Mart This Way Comes", "Cartman Sucks", "The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs", " Cancelled”, “Something you can do with your finger”
